Christmas Cheer

We all came together at Christmas in Devon. Alistair and Dee hosted a wonderful Christmas, with Ed's turkey delicious Ted for Christmas dinner. We were treated on Christmas Eve to a wonderful Violin Concert played by Iona, Naomi and Jessica. As many presents as ever were opened on Christmas morning with the usual sighs of excess.

Plotting in the Village

The New allotment club has been established and the plotters have been hard at work preparing the ground. with all the rain there's not been much digging but we have been busy clearing all the debris, submerged carpet, glass, glass and more glass. we have measured the plot and intend to mark out our beds next weekend. seeds were ordered last night so hopefully the sewing will begin in the next couple of weeks.

Jess and Naomi will have their own beds, Naomi is looking forward to growing many tasty carrots, and Jess flowers

Highs and Lows

We had a great weekend with Grandad Bell visiting and then Grandma Smale joining us too for Sunday dinner, both without partners (Grandma B unable to leave Devon and John stuck on the M5 on his way to Blackpool).
Alistair spent Saturday morning supervising Ed's roof work. it was rather draining for Ed but he enjoyed the view from the roof.
Saturday evening we all went to the local Indian restaurant for Constance's first curry night out. the evening was to celebrate Ed's very high results for his nursing degree (WELL DONE ED).
Sunday we travelled to the coast to do some kiting with Alastair's 6 and 4 metre kites. it was a windy day and Jess and Naomi enjoyed some hair raising and gravity defying flights.
In the afternoon come rain or shine the girls were going riding. fortunately the hailstones cleared and we had a two hour ride along the line, jumps included. Alison and Bella also had a ride, by then Buster the pony was feeling a little frisky as we had turned down and it is was all we could do to stop her bolting for home.
It was a welcome sight to see a lovely roast chicken dinner, prepared by Ed, followed by a classic fruit salad a la Gill

ORGANIC POULTRY PRODUCE FOR 2007

After the success of 2006, we at Smale & Minett Organic Produce are delighted to inform all customers that fresh and pickled eggs will be on sale as early as February. After a successful winter moult our chickens and quail are all slowly coming back into lay for the new year. Chicken eggs will be on sale first, however unfortunately quail eggs won't be available until early April. This due to eggs being used for breeding. Incubators hope to be running in late February. This year as in 2006 we will be breeding Japanese quail for eggs laying. However, we are also pleased to be adding 2 new breeds of quail to our dedicated team of hard working layers. These breeds are Chinese Painted quail and Italian laying quail. Both eggs will be available fresh or pickled. 2007 should be a very tasty year! There is no mistaking the unique flavours of SMALE & MINETT pickled Japanese quail eggs. Each egg’s flavour should be savoured as an accompaniment to all kinds of rustic farm house meals. To ensure unleashing maximum flavour, wash down with a good Cabernet Sauvignon. Ingredients; Japanese quail eggs, white wine vinegar, secret spices.

Wine Club

Inspired by Richard and Judy and fed up with drinking the same wine, in the new year we revamped our regular get together with friends and established the Llwydcoed Wine Club. We’ve developed a taste for fine wine over the past year, so bring a bottle and you’ll always find a welcome in the Valleys. Which everyone did the night before Christmas eve we held a special wine club cheese and wine evening. Joined by old and new friends we supped (or at least some of us did) unti the early hours of Christmas eve!

Pony Madness!

Jess and Naomi have both been pony mad this year!
It started when they were offered the loan of a local pony on condition that their mum come with them and learn how to tack the pony up (to those uninitiated that means put the saddle, bridle, and reins on). Alison rose to the challenge although a little nervously at first and was gradually brainwashed along with the girls and is now showing symptoms of a most fatal disease– PONY MADNESS!
Jessica and Naomi were further infected when their great grandma Bell offered to pay for a pony riding holiday. The offer was immediately accepted and it did not take long for the holiday to be booked. Great Grandma Bell will live in the girls memories forever now, because their riding holiday at the Cornish Riding School, was described on their return as the holiday of a lifetime. Pony madness had now reached an incurable stage and there was nothing to be done but agree that they needed a pony, if and only if they could prove commitment to the upkeep and care of a pony. Jessica duly accepted and met the challenge, getting up every morning at 6am to go up to the fields and provide Breeze with a welcome carrot. Unfortunately Naomi suffers with lying in syndrome and preferred her warm and comfy bed.
The search is now on for a friendly riding pony for Jessica (and Naomi to assist). We are hoping to re-home a pony and have made links with a number of horse and pony re-homing charities. So watch this space for next year!
Our year ended in style with a trip to the NEC in Birmingham to see the Spanish Riding School of Vienna., the oldest riding school in Europe. To put that in perspective Great Grandma and Grandad Bell saw them in Vienna 50 years ago! Jessica and Naomi loved the show but their highlight was seeing the Metropolitan Police horses jump through hoops of fire. Guess what they want to do when they grow up?

The Plot Thickens!

Inspired by the meat and egg side of the family food business, and by her auntie June, Alison and the girls, in partnership with their friend John have acquired an allotment.
It will require a lot of digging over coming months before sowing the first crops next year, but all are confident they are up to the task.
Lets hope its not a case of digging a hole too deep! Or “that’s another fine mess you’ve got me into” Watch this space!

Musical Achievement

Jessica and Naomi have really taken to playing their musical instruments this year. They both enjoyed a master class with their great uncle William, when we visited the Isle of Mann for our cousin Louise’s wedding in the summer. Since then they have practiced and practiced and the hills really are alive with the sound of music in the Welsh Valleys. Jessica has joined the orchestra at her new school, whilst the teacher has told Naomi’s violin class mates that they are to practice every day if they are to catch up with Naomi!. Naomi won a place in the school choir, following a successful audition and sings constantly in the house, in the car, on walks, at breakfast, dinner……….!!!!!!!!!

Turkey Delicious

Our garden birds go from strength to strength. Ed has been busy building his flock over the past year. We now have 8 chickens, numerous quail and 4 turkeys (although by the time you read this they may await the table!)
2006 has proved to be a fantastic year for Smale & Minett Valleys Produce. With intense competition coming from Bernard Matthews and many other illustrious food company’s, our operation has thus far grown. Chicken and quail egg sales hit the £60 profit mark as early as September (Ed has since retired). Also we have added free range Bronze turkeys to our diverse organic range of products. Given that each bird was to be sold at a handsome price, profits for the year looked like hitting the £200 pound mark. However, after a brutal and unexpected dog attack one frosty morning, I’m sad to say that two of our precious flock were viciously murdered. A moments silence please..Tina and Tessa (the turkeys) RIP.

But it was worth all the hard work, on Christmas day turkey ted was unanimously pronounced "turkey delicious"!

96 and Climbing!

Great Grandma Bell reached the ripe old age of 96 this year. We all celebrated with her and enjoyed a good old fashioned family get together. Grandma is now in her 97th year!

Its a Dogs Life

After the sad and unexpected loss of our beloved dog Poppy last year, we now have a bouncy and friendly addition to the family, Bracken a black cross Labrador, re-homed from the RSPCA.
Bracken was about 20 weeks when she joined us, having been rescued by the RSPCA from a neglected and flee ridden house. She is now leading a very different and much loved life, even the chickens have accepted her, although she still needs to do a little more to gain Tiggers heart! Dee’s dog Skye took to Bracken straight away mistaking her for daughter of Poppy!
We returned to the RSPCA in the summer where Jess and Naomi both won rosettes.

Holidays Holidays

Our year started in festive style with our annual ski pilgrimage to the Alps at our regular apartment in Belle Plagne. This year we were joined by two new members to our ski house party, Constance for her first ski holiday and Ed’s cousin, Martin who set the pace on the slopes for us all. Made an offer they couldn’t refuse from their Grandad and Grandma Bell, Jessica and Naomi started snowboarding lessons! Jessica took to it like a penguin to ice. Naomi a little longer, but by the end of the week both agreed their skiing days were over! Alison was back on the slopes after a gap year having Constance, taking a more leisurely pace boarding this year with Ed. Fe and Indi were the speed king and queen of the slopes! With Iona and Rowan not far behind!

In May we all met up again at the Forest of Dean for a cycling holiday. Our new caravan provided a great venue for Naomi’s 9th birthday party. July saw us travel to the Isle of Mann for Louise’s wedding and in August a week in West Wales was followed by Cornwall where Grandma and Grandad Bell joined us camping. We had a great time, visiting Eden and watching a musical at the outdoor Minnack Theatre. Its been a year of wildlife, we’ve seen harbour seals in the Isle of Mann and Newquay, basking sharks but our highlight was a family of otters in the River Tor. We felt privileged to see such rare and shy creatures. Its been great having so many holidays with our extended family, and that we all enjoy each others company. We’ve had weekends away throughout the year, including visits to Fe and Indi, Will and Liz, Bill and Jill, Melanie and Gail. We’ve been regular guests at Gill and John’s. Gill is an excellent cook, combined with John’s fresh produce we are very well looked after.
